Pirates hit Mawi where it hurts
BY JANE RITIKOS
KUALA LUMPUR: Akademi Fantasia 3 winner Mawi has been attacked – by pirates!
The pop sensation has discovered he is a hot item even at roadside VCD/CD stalls.
A sad and frustrated Mawi said he learnt recently that his new album, Mawi, Yang Tercinta, had been pirated.
“The CD is really different. It was mixed with songs during my Akademi Fantasia days. I was really sad when I saw it.
“I inspected the album for some time. After all my hard work, other people are reaping profits from it,” he said in his debut column, Mawi World, in mStar Online, The Star’s Malay news portal.
Mawi recalled the time and energy he had spent working on his album. For two months, he hardly slept as he was in the studio day and night.
“Eating was irregular because I wanted to finish the album. So, it is frustrating to see the pirated copies.
“But what can I do except to leave it to God and the authorities,” he added.
The incident has put Mawi in the same spot as other artistes.
“Now that this has happened, I think of those stories I read about artistes being upset when their albums were pirated. At that time, I did not bother.
“No wonder they were sad. Now that it has happened to me, I understand.
“It is not easy to be an artiste after all. You have to go through a lot,” he added.
Still, he accepts the reality, adding that he is not usually the type to get angry. At times when he is upset, he prefers to keep the anger “in his heart”.
On his album, he said he was touched to hear that the Mawi Fan Club was working to check piracy.
“I appreciate your support and sacrifices,” he told his fans.
“I can only advise my supporters, don’t buy the pirated ones.”
Despite the piracy, the album has already sold more than 100,000 copies.
“This is unbelievable,” said Mawi.
Mawi World will be a regular column in mStar, which can be accessed at www.mstar.com.my.
