Nin hao, hello, apa khabar, hola, namaste, lei hou:
Ha..ha.. I 2 wld like 2 join u all to tell abt the languages I speak. The top 5 languages most widely spoken are: 1) English 2) Mandarin 3) Spanish 4) Hindi 5) Bahasa Melayu The ranking may be debateable wht English or Mandarin depending on whose point of view, wht by population or no. of speakers. In the western world, Spanish is ranked no. 3 but if by population, then Hindi. If we combine the whole population of Indonesia (> 220 million) then Bahasa Melayu will b the 5th or 6th. The upcoming language 4 the future will be Arabic, so said one report.
I can tell u tt knowing the languages have been very helpful when it comes 2 travelling on yr own. I asked 4 directions in Mandarin in a Chinese Restaurant in Paris (Parisian won´t spk 2 people in English). Bought bus tickets in Rome, Italy in Spanish, becos the Italians mostly don´t understd English. Spoke Hindi in a petrol kiosk somewhere between Austin and San Antonio in Texas. The Argentinian immigration officers were so amused tt with our Asian faces we spoke fluent Spanish and it got us out of trouble when we exited from border of Argentina without visa into Paraguay.
The moral of the story is tt we already covered the top 4 of the languages in the world by being malaysian who speaks Mandarin. In this world of globalization, languages are very important to break the ice. I strongly prompt the learning of languages esp, Mandarin. I was also banana b4. Now I´m only slightly better with spoken Mandarin. best regards, kwfong

Actually due to the HUGE population of Chinese......some commented that Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the world..... but actually..... one interesting about language is...... language itself will diverge within an area..... a kampung's language could be slightly different from another kampung...... in simple description..... the language speciation event occurs so that there's SO MANY dialect in Chinese.... namely Mandarin (Beijing hua), Cantonese, Hokkien, Teochew, Hakka and so on..... Malay in different state is slightly different from each others..... and even Hokkien in northern and southern are different from each other...... Hakka has its subdialects..... Chinese language has a HUGE history time space for it to diverge into so many dialects...... and actually some people did comment that using Mandarin (Beijing hua) as a standardization of Chinese language is a bad choice as Beijing hua is actually less "beautiful" compared to Cantonese Hakka and so on..... As kwfong said something about banana...... just wanna make some short comment regard banana issue (LOL)..... Knowing your mother language is important..... sometimes the reason for us to learn mandarin or chinese is not because the rapid development of China..... but rather..... we are chinese...... you don't see a britons that dunno English..... you don't see a Japanese that do not know Japanese..... so as Korean, French, Germany and even Arabian.... I myself appreciate people who do not know chinese language and yet willing to learn it..... but i cant stand people looking down to chinese language when him or herself is chinese-blooded...
